NAME: Mu-tron Bi-Phase

I've worked out how to make the two phase cores either series or parallel too, whcih the Bi-Phase doesn't have. I'm definatly building this to add to my 'stock products' as I think a Bi-Phase work-a-like will be really popular. So thanks for the inspiration! It's gonna be called 'Gemini Dual Core Phase Shifter'. The Mu-Tron Bi-Phase is a dual phase-shifter invented and marketed by Musictronics USA in the 70s. It has become well-known and well-loved for it’s ‘classic’ warm and deep sound, as well as the flexibility of it’s control and audio-processing capabilities. The Bi-Phase seeks to accurately reproduce the sound and control layout of the original unit. With as long as it historically has taken the Mu-FX team (which now appears to be operating as Mu-tron) to develop new products and the similarity with the Pi-phase, I think a collaboration with Prophecy to release the Bi-phase so quickly after coming out with the Micro-tron seems likely.

Story

Mutron Bi-Phase with pedal, circa 1977. a/c powered. Two independent phase shifters housed in a large silver box with big knobs and switches and a wah-style foot pedal with 2 on/off buttons and speed control controlled by foot action. The worlds largest phase shifter! Settings include independent control over 2 phasors, 2 sweep generators with rate and shape (~ wave or square wave), manual or pedal option, Phasor A with depth and feedback plus gen 1 or pedal switch for sweep. Phasor B has more controls. Depth and feedback plus sweep sync option of norm or rev(erse) and sweep option of either gen1, gen2 or ped(al) and Phasor B input consisting of inA, outA or inB! Giant placards that fit over the housing include red marked settings for 3 effects examples: Stereo Phasing, Super Phasing and Two-Speed Phasing! This unit delivers the quintessential phasing sounds used in the 70’s from the airplane-type whooshing sounds to the slow wide flanger-type effects. Plus, two-speed phasing yields some funkitized possibilities. Set one phasor slow and the other fast and the skies the limit. A favorite setting is the leslie cabinet sound from fast rate and moderate setting with little to no feedback. Then there’s the classic setting of slower rate with much depth and feedback for reaching spatial territories! A quick way back to 1975 or ahead to 2050!

The Mu-Tron Bi-phase is one of the coolest phasers around. It’s 2 phasers in one, and you can chain them in parallel or in series. It’s got 2 ins and 2 outs. Each phaser has its own sweep generator or LFO (low frequency oscillator) responsible for automatic phase sweeping. The feedback gives you a nice juicy resonance effect that made Mutron Phasers famous. You can sweep both phasers by sweep generator #1 or sweep them each from their own generator for complex sweeping. This is great for spacy, morphing sounds. Switch between sine wave and square wave LFO for variety. You get the idea… Used by lots of guitarists and electric piano and vintage synth players in the 70s and 80s, this effect can be used on just about anything, with interesting results. Even if you’re not trying to recapture that vintage sound, consider this unit if you’re looking for a really good phaser. It’s got much more character than any modern phaser we’ve heard. Think Stevie Wonder, and Butch Vig’s secret weapon with Smashing Pumpkins.

Specifications

Sweep Gen 1 Rate – controls the speed/rate of the LFO wave that controls the effectSweep Gen 1Man/Ped -switches the rate of the LFO between the setting of the Rate knob and the pedal
Sweep Gen 1 Shape – switches the LFO between a square and a sine wave
Sweep Gen 2 Rate – controls the speed/rate of the LFO wave that controls the effect
Sweep Gen 2 Shape – switches the LFO between a square and a sine wave
Phasor A Depth – controls the depth/amplitude of the modulation (the size of the range in which the effect sweeps).
Phasor A – Feedback – sets the amount of effected signal fed back into the effect (for a stronger effect)
Phasor A (Ped/Gen 1) – switches the sweep control of the phasor between pedal control and LFO control by Sweep Generator 1
Phasor B Depth – controls the depth/amplitude of the modulation (the size of the range in which the effect sweeps).
Phasor B Feedback – sets the amount of effected signal fed back into the effect (for a stronger effect)
Phasor B Sweep Sync (Norm/Rev) – switches between normal sweep and reverse sweep (if you use the same sweep source as phasor A, phasor B will move in the opposite direction).
Phasor B Sweep (Gen 1 / Gen 2 / Ped) – switches the sweep control of the phasor between pedal control, LFO control by Sweep Generator 1 and LFO control by Sweep Generator 2
Phasor B Input – selects a source for Phasor B: input A (same input as Phasor A), output A (Phasor B gets the output of Phasor A as input), input B (separate input for Phasor B)

About the Mu-tron Bi-Phase from Wikipedia:

Phaser effects were common in the 1970s, but the Mu-tron Bi-Phase combined two phase shifting circuits. In its time, it was the preferred 'phaser-lover's 'phasor''. It used technology from the old Univox Uni-Vibe , with lamps and photo cells , and featuring two independent sweep generators which could be coupled, each with individual rate controls and the option to choose square or sine waves . The unit could be connected to an optional rocking foot pedal (not included here) so that the effect could be operated in the samemanner as a wah-wah pedal. It was used by The Smashing Pumpkins as an integral part in achieving the 'pumpkins sound' for the 1993 album Siamese Dream: 'This is one of the secrets to our secret sound. This is the Mu-tron Bi-Phase. We run everything through it - everything. It's fabulous', said producer Butch Vig.
